Murata’s Capacitor Sales Increased 34% In June Quarter; Down 29.1% Year-Over Year

Murata Manufacturing Company Limited of Japan, the world’s largest capacitor manufacturer, reported a 34% increase in capacitor sales between the quarter ending March 31, 2009, and the quarter ending June 30, 2009. During that time period, Murata’s capacitor sales increased from 28.49 billion yen to 38.20 billion yen. In comparison to the June quarter of 2008 however, capacitor sales remain down by 29.1%. Murata noted that on a year-over-year basis, sales of chip monolithic capacitors, and application specific ceramic capacitors for the computer industry had shown significant declines. For the company as a whole, June 2009 quarterly revenues were 117.5 billion yen, up by 26.1% on a quarter-to-quarter basis, but down 20.4% on a year-over-year basis in comparison to the June 2008 quarter, when total consolidated revenues were 147.6 billion yen. Murata noted that unit shipments of components in the June 2009 quarter were up sequentially, but price erosion, and the appreciation of yen to the US dollar, limited sequential value growth. On a regional basis, sales in the Japanese market for the June 2009 quarter remained down by 18% on a year-over-year basis; while sales to the Americas were down by 39%; sales to Europe were down by 30%, and sales to Asia were down 11%. Sequentially, on a quarter-to-quarter basis in 2009, all regions showed improvement for Murata, with sales to the Japanese market (including intersegment sales) increasing by 34%, sales to Asia increasing by 33%, sales to Europe increasing 17%, and sales to the Americas increasing by 2%. For the September 2009 quarter, Murata is forecasting 12.5% revenue growth on a sequential basis to 132 billion yen for the company as a whole. Samsung MLCC Sales up 37% in June Quarter On Sequential Basis; Up 49% YoY

Through a combination of favorable pricing and advanced Multilayered Ceramic Chip Capacitor (MLCC) technology, Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO) increased MLCC sales by 37% on a sequential basis in the Quarter ending June 30th 2009. MLCC sales at Samsung increased from 214 billion won in the March quarter to 293 billion won in the June quarter. On a year-over-year basis, MLCC sales in the June 2009 quarter were up by 49% compared to the same quarter in 2008. The company is on a run-rate to sell 1,100 billion Won in MLCC for the full year, up from 592 billion Won in 2008. The company’s success in a down economy is significant. SEMCO has increased market share in the global MLCC business from 7% in Fiscal Year 2008 to 11% in Fiscal Year 2009, and this will grow to an estimated 18% by FY 2010. The company is well positioned in selling MLCC into specific high growth end-use markets such as Smartphones, Flat Panel Television Sets and Digital Cameras, also the company has successfully matched MLCC high capacitance technology coming from Japan; and is now poised to advance beyond and become a technological leader in the field. This was exemplified in April 2009 with SEMCO’s release of their 1 microfarad 0603 case size MLCC, which is considered a technical milestone in capacitor manufacturing. Passive Component Market Loses Big

The soon to be released study on the global market outlook for capacitors, resistors and inductors indicates a broad market downturn in November, December and January, with outlook for the fiscal year ending March 2009 off significantly for the year in both value and volume of shipments. Backlogs in high volume supply chains, coupled with staggering losses in automotive electronics indicate a swift demise to the high tech economy in one quarter. Visibility on shipments in the quarter ending March 2009 indicate that passive component consumption is in recession, and the overall impact of failures in the high tech economy are now just being realized. Since passive components are required for all circuits, their economies are indicative of a three month outlook for end-product builds. The study shows the market getting worse in the short-term with signficant risks for manufacturers without cash reserves exceeding 20% of annual revenues. The study notes that "in the past, there were certain components that fared better than others, but in this downturn most of the 12 components we track in this study were all impacted in a similar manner because the nature of the downturn was from an unrelated market segment impacting the consumer's ability to spend. This caused a bottleneck that spilled back in the form of excess inventories in the supply chain, and new limitations on the outlets by which those products had been historically delivered to the consumer now compounds the issue. " Its not all bad news though. Some bright spots tied to global bailouts in the USA, China and Europe hold promise for specific capacitor, resistor and inductors especially for the efficient delivery of power and the integration of renewable energy supply into the existing power grid of industrialized nations.
